Study Manea

The descendants of Kupe welcome you, as do the spirits of our ancestors. Enter Te Hokianga-nui-a-Kupe, a cradle of tribal histories. Walk with us in the footprints of our ancestor – Kupe the intrepid, Kupe the voyager, Kupe the discoverer. Welcome to Manea – Footprints of Kupe.

Manea – Footprints of Kupe is fruition long held vision of local Kaumātua (elders) to preserve and celebrate our heritage and to share it with the world.

Manea – Footprints of Kupe links to multiple areas of Matauranga Māori and New Zealand Curriculum. Our learning materials have been developed by qualified education specialists to support schools before, during, and post-visit.

Bookings are essential. We also have a set ratio for supervision, for the safety and management of groups. Our education staff will help to plan for your visit.

The Experience

Education groups are warmly welcomed to Manea through traditional welcome ceremonies of pōwhiri before a 75 minute exploration program led by a Footprints of Kupe expert guide. Our guide shares narrative of Kupe’s arrival in Aotearoa as the very first person to New Zealand.

His story is the opening chapter of our nation’s human story.  An interactive program, students are encouraged to ask questions and share their thoughts. Manea – Footprints of Kupe culminates with a 4D live theatre presentation of Kupe’s journey to Aotearoa.

Students view the actual harbour mouth that welcomed Kupe and traverse the very same ground and landmarks that were Kupe’s first steps in a new land. Extra time is available to groups to dig deeper into our history within our interactive gallery space.
